The universe is a quantum computer<\/div>\n

universe began, it began computing. At \ue0c4rst the

it produced wer<\/span>e simple,
\n comprising elementary particles\n <\/div>\n
and establishing the fundamental laws of physics. In
\n time,\n <\/div>\n
as it processed mor<\/span>e and
\n more information, the universe\n <\/div>\n
spun out ever more intricate and complex patterns,\n <\/div>\n
including galaxies, stars, and planets. Life,
\n language,\n <\/div>\n
human beings, society<\/span>,
\n culture\u2014all owe their existence\n <\/div>\n
to the intrinsic ability of matter and energy to
\n process\n <\/div>\n

Why is the cosmos so complex?<\/div>\n
\u201cThe computational capability <\/span>of the <\/span>universe explains\n <\/div>\n
one of the <\/span>great
\n mysteries of nature: how complex\n <\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n

systems such as <\/span>living
\n creatur<\/span>es can <\/span>arise from\n <\/div>\n
fundamentally simple physical <\/span>laws\u2026. The <\/span>digital\n <\/div>\n
revolution under way today <\/span>is merely the latest in\n <\/div>\n
a long line <\/span>of
\n information-processing revolutions<\/span><\/div>\n
stretching back through the development of <\/span>language,\n <\/div>\n
the evolution of <\/span>sex,
\n and <\/span>the creation of life, to <\/span>the\n <\/div>\n
beginning of the <\/span>universe
\n itself. <\/span>Each revolution has\n <\/div>\n
laid the groundwork for <\/span>the
\n next, and <\/span>all information-\n <\/div>\n
processing r<\/span>evolutions
\n since <\/span>the Big Bang <\/span>stem from the\n <\/div>\n
intrinsic information-processing ability of <\/span>the universe.\n <\/div>\n
The computational universe <\/span>necessarily<\/span> generates\n <\/div>\n
complexity<\/span>. <\/span>Life, sex, the <\/span>brain, and <\/span>human
\n civilization\n <\/div>\n
did not come <\/span>about by

Lloyd and his key scienti\ue0c4c compatriots are now\n <\/div>\n
holed-up at MIT\u2019<\/span>s new
\n Center for Extr<\/span>eme Quantum\n <\/div>\n
Information Theory (established in 2007) of which
\n Lloyd\n <\/div>\n
is the Director [ google MIT xQIT ]. Lloyds
\n hypothesis\n <\/div>\n
converges with mine. The universe does \u2018compute
\n itself,\u2019\n <\/div>\n
and complexity \u2018is no accident.\u2019<\/div>\n
Now<\/span>, to a pro\ue0c4cient
\n cutting-edge secular MIT scientist\n <\/div>\n
observing a slice of the universe at-work, the
\n universe\n <\/div>\n
might appear as a quantum computer<\/span>. What the scientist\n <\/div>\n
is observing, however (according to our hypothesis)
\n is the\n <\/div>\n
quantum aspect of In\ue0c4nite Divine Extraordinariation
\n at-\n <\/div>\n
work.<\/div>\n
From my perspective, the MIT gr<\/span>oup is pretty adroitly\n <\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n
\n
dealing with a very key conceptual slice of the
\n (multi-\n <\/div>\n
billion-year) unfolding of the cosmic drama. Thus
\n this\n <\/div>\n
\u2018Quantum Information\u2019 group would have a
\n potentially\n <\/div>\n
signi\ue0c4cant interest and \u201cstake\u201d in Summa. And,
\n Summa, in\n <\/div>\n
turn, has an extremely signi\ue0c4cant \u201cstake\u201d in this
\n group.\n <\/div>\n
Of course, on some level we \u2018talk past each
\n other<\/span>.\u2019 They\n <\/div>\n
speak mechanisms; we speak metaphysics. But, on\n <\/div>\n
another crucial level \u2013 i.e. the entire Universe as
\n ~self-\n <\/div>\n
generating and ~complexifying \u2013 we crucially
\n intersect.\n <\/div>\n
The MIT center potentially buttresses a very major
\n swath\n <\/div>\n
of Summa \u2013 from the pinnacle of contemporary
\n cutting-\n <\/div>\n
edge academic hard sciences.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n

* Lloyd\u2019<\/span>s ~mechanistic terminology posits \u201ca computer which <\/span><\/span>\n <\/div>\n
computes\u201d; I might rather say \u201can In\ue0c4nite Divine
\n which \u2018creates\u2019\n <\/div>\n
or \u2018iterates.\u2019\u201d Note that Seth Lloyd is currently
\n (October<\/span>, 2012) a\n <\/div>\n
Professor of Mechanical Engineering at MIT<\/span>, and has self-described\n <\/div>\n
himself as a \u2018quantum mechanic.\u2019 Notwithstanding
\n the probability that\n <\/div>\n
Lloyd is more multi-dimensional than he pr<\/span>ofesses, his background\n <\/div>\n
context is relevant her<\/span>e.\n <\/div>\n
Note as well that Lloyd\u2019<\/span>s
\n group is a small cadre of iconoclastic\n <\/div>\n
top-\ue0c5ight scientists\/engineers\/mathematicians
\n repr<\/span>esenting mainly\n <\/div>\n
themselves (and not the scienti\ue0c4c community
\n at-large), albeit with the\n <\/div>\n
imprimatur of MIT for their esoteric and mind-stretching r<\/span>esearch. <\/span><\/div>\n
