and degrading <\/span>understatement.
\n <\/span>The <\/span>meta-emotional\n <\/div>\n
human response <\/span>to this
\n <\/span>piece <\/span>of <\/span>art (and <\/span>it <\/span>is <\/span>not alone) <\/span> <\/span><\/div>\n

It has <\/span>been <\/span>said <\/span>that <\/span>God is <\/span>the <\/span>ultimate <\/span>artist,<\/span> <\/span> <\/span><\/div>\n
creating a <\/span>world-dynamic
\n with <\/span>all <\/span>the <\/span>idiosyncrasies<\/span> <\/span><\/div>\n
of complex <\/span>art. <\/span>T<\/span>o <\/span>praise His <\/span>work <\/span>as <\/span>being merely\n <\/div>\n
\u2018perfect\u2019 or <\/span>\u2018ef\ue0c4cient\u2019
\n <\/span>is <\/span>to <\/span>miss its <\/span>creative essence. <\/span>It\n <\/div>\n
is to <\/span>embrace <\/span>the <\/span>engineer <\/span>while

This is <\/span>a <\/span>neglect <\/span>bolstered by <\/span>science
\n and <\/span>mathematics,\n <\/div>\n
disciplines whose <\/span>unique
\n understanding <\/span>of the universe\u2019<\/span>s\n <\/div>\n
exactitude has <\/span>been
\n <\/span>used <\/span>to <\/span>turn <\/span>the <\/span>focus <\/span>fr<\/span>om <\/span>its\n <\/div>\n
delicate elegance. <\/span>The
\n <\/span>cold <\/span>progr<\/span>ession <\/span>of <\/span>evolution\n <\/div>\n
engenders an <\/span>appreciation
\n for <\/span>the <\/span>lion\u2019<\/span>s strength,
\n <\/span>for the\n <\/div>\n
cheetah\u2019<\/span>s speed; <\/span>the <\/span>precision of <\/span>physics
\n provides <\/span>a<\/span> <\/span><\/div>\n

Darwinian evolution <\/span>need

butter\ue0c5y<\/span>, <\/span>the <\/span>vulnerable <\/span>dove; the
\n <\/span>Earth\u2019<\/span>s <\/span>orbit need\n <\/div>\n
not have <\/span>yielded <\/span>the <\/span>grace <\/span>of changing <\/span>seasons,\n <\/div>\n
snow-decorated forests. <\/span>Indeed
\n laws <\/span>of <\/span>nature and\n <\/div>\n
principles of <\/span>physics
\n <\/span>need <\/span>not <\/span>have yielded
\n <\/span>complexity\n <\/div>\n
at all. <\/span>Nevertheless,
\n <\/span>complexity <\/span>permeates <\/span>our
\n world\n <\/div>\n
from subatomic <\/span>particles
\n to <\/span>cosmic <\/span>galaxies. <\/span>It is
\n <\/span>this\n <\/div>\n
complexity that <\/span>allows
\n <\/span>for <\/span>the <\/span>sophisticated
\n beauty <\/span>that\n <\/div>\n
stands in <\/span>wait <\/span>of <\/span>our <\/span>per<\/span>ception <\/span>daily<\/span>.\n <\/div>\n
Y<\/span>et <\/span>the <\/span>paradox <\/span>of this <\/span>complexity <\/span>surfaces <\/span>as we
\n <\/span>probe<\/span> <\/span><\/div>\n
it more <\/span>deeply<\/span>. <\/span>Structural <\/span>biologists have
\n <\/span>shown <\/span>that\n <\/div>\n
fundamental biology <\/span>depends
\n <\/span>on <\/span>predictable chemistry<\/span>.\n <\/div>\n
Quantum mechanics <\/span>has
\n <\/span>shown <\/span>that <\/span>chemistry<\/span>, <\/span>in <\/span>turn,\n <\/div>\n
can be <\/span>dissected <\/span>into <\/span>the <\/span>physics that <\/span>underlies <\/span>it.\n <\/div>\n
Einstein showed <\/span>that
\n <\/span>even <\/span>within <\/span>physics
\n separations\n <\/div>\n
are an illusion. His special theory of r<\/span>elativity (<\/span>1905<\/span>)\n <\/div>\n
revealed that <\/span>the
\n division <\/span>between <\/span>space <\/span>and
\n time <\/span>is\n <\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n

arti\ue0c4cial. His <\/span>subsequent
\n <\/span>general <\/span>theory <\/span>of
\n relativity<\/span> <\/span><\/div>\n

complexity while <\/span>the

reveals its <\/span>unity<\/span>. <\/span>Stepping <\/span>back, we <\/span>appreciate worldly\n <\/div>\n
complexity<\/span>, <\/span>stepping <\/span>close <\/span>we are
\n astounded <\/span>by <\/span>its <\/span>unity<\/span>.\n <\/div>\n
Such is <\/span>the <\/span>paradox. <\/span>Complexity <\/span>and
\n unity <\/span>challenge\n <\/div>\n
one another <\/span>as <\/span>they <\/span>each <\/span>thrust forward
\n expanding\n <\/div>\n
their respective <\/span>scopes
\n simultaneously<\/span>. <\/span>New <\/span>species<\/span> <\/span><\/div>\n
are discovered as <\/span>uni\ue0c4ed
\n theorems are <\/span>developed. This\n <\/div>\n
duality teases <\/span>us <\/span>with <\/span>its <\/span>plainness: we <\/span>can <\/span>only <\/span>watch,<\/span> <\/span><\/div>\n
spellbound, as <\/span>our <\/span>cosmos\u2019 <\/span>singularity <\/span>and its
\n <\/span>nuance\n <\/div>\n
develop and <\/span>unfold,
